Good News for Breast Cancer Survivors
Chinese American Invents Physical Therapy for Pain Relief

Breast Cancer has become the main enemy for men and women in the world since the number of victims are increasing.  Besides the treatment of radiation and surgery, the breast cancer survivors need physical therapy in order to recover the movement.  San Francisco Chinese American physical therapist, Julie Wong, has invented special therapy for the after effects of radiation and surgery such as retaining water (swelling) and muscle pain.  Her invention has been most recommended in the medical field.

Wong has opened her physical therapy clinic since 1991 and was the victim of breast cancer 5 years ago.  She remembers after 3 months of radiation treatment her body was weak, she had muscle pain and her body retained water.  Movement of her shoulder, back and arm were restricted.  Then she visited Seattle many times where she got advice from a well known osteopathic doctor that the scar from the radiation and surgery is the main reason for the lack of liquid circulation in the body.  Some liquid can not pass through the tightness of the local muscle structure.  Some area can not release water and is retained.  She said the osteopathic doctor in Seattle used her body as an example; started physical therapy on her stomach, front of the neck and underarm.  After one hour of treatment, they discovered that the retained water (swelling) decreased and each arm decreased by 1.5 inches.

Since then, Wong has focused on how to increase the circulation of water in the body.  At the end of 2006, she took classes in Seattle with the well known osteopathic doctor and she invented a special therapy to increase the circulation of water in the body.  For example, she has the patient sit straight up, expand the rib cage area, let the body circulation open up, then she would massage the stomach, front of the neck and underarm to increase the water movement.  Wong said, the liquid circulate in your body and the tightness of the muscle and retaining water will not happen again.  The body movement increased dramatically and the patient recovers back to pre radiation.

On the same day we interviewed a patient from Santa Rosa.  Her doctor told her after the radiation and surgery, she would not be able to lift heavy things; would not be able to recover the capability of movement and no exercise, but to a travel lover it is a nightmare.  After getting one year of treatment from Wong, the patient is almost recovered completely and has no problem traveling frequently.

Wong said, 30 percent of her patients are breast cancer victims and 3 percent are Asians.  She said Chinese Americans need to be more Breast Cancer awareness, she encourages everyone to do their monthly breast exam, that is how Wong discovered her breast cancer at an early stage and she has completely recovered.
